Changing Times Means Changing The Way You Do Things

As we all embrace the changes the internet has brought to the show cattle world we would like to remind you as you pull up a chair at your computer each night that levels of pre picture day pampering varies from state to state. So while cattle in some markets have had 10-20 bubble baths and have been treated like a beauty queen, in other markets especially South Dakota cattle are often pictured and videoed with as little as 1 bath and “ranch clip” job. Each way of selling can lead to big time show winners.

We personally enjoy internet sales, we also encourage you to take extra time on less fashionable operations that don’t offer the more pampered calf that may have tremendous long term potential.

An example of this would be Jim Krantz in Howard, South Dakota. Tag 22 Hawkeye heifer was brought into the coral this morning and walked straight into the picture pen without wash, blow or clip. She will go onto a successful show career, this much we are sure of.

An example of buying cattle when they are truly “green” in their condition would be the legendary summer Jeff & Jamie Assman just had in the summer of 2018. They offered 2 Hawkeye Steers on their September 2017 pasture sale.

One Hawkeye Steer sold to Brian Crow of Alabama for a conservative sale price and that steer went on to be the Grand Champion Steer at the no fit Kentucky State Fair in August 2018.

The other Hawkeye Steer the Assman’s offered did not receive a bid. They made the decision to feed the steer themselves and he went on to be a many time champion including Champion Chi Steer @ Summer Spotlight & Reserve Grand Chi @ South Dakota State Fair

While it’s tough to always look in person, we encourage you to spend extra time evaluating the less pampered calves that the great state of South Dakota is offering over the next several weeks!
